Yeah, Kobe was right. If Shaq had spent more effort on training, he would have become even greater than he had been. One aspect that he should have spent more time on was rebounding. His offensive/defensive rebounding stats were very good, but nothing close to what he should have accomplished with his superb body and athleticism. There was no reason why he couldn't grab more rebounds than Dennis Rodman. Shaq was far superior both in body strength and athleticism. All too often players did not want to spend effort on rebounding. For example, I remember seeing Shaq attempted a mid range 2-pointer and then immediately turned around and ran back to their court for defense. The fact was, it was not that important for him to go back for defense as fast as possible, as the opponents must have at least a couple of players doing defensive rebounding, so Shaq's team wouldn't be out-numbered in defense. What he should be doing was run to the hoop for offensive rebounding. In addition, when he was lining along the two lines for his team's free throws, it would be difficult to guard him when fighting for missed free throws, but he really didn't make much effort to fight for those kind of rebounds.... |
